The Moon Presents: The Nipple Show, An Immersive Experiment in Collective Perception
Multimedia spectacle of unblushingly liberal exposure envisions a new normal for the nipple
When “normal” has been weaponized against us, our only recourse is to take it back. The Moon, a Grand Rapids-based creative hub with global reach, is inviting audiences to recontextualize the human mammary gland with The Nipple Show, an intentionally enveloping experience blending visual, performance, and musical art to free the nipple from shame and embrace a sensitive and supportive understanding of its enduring vitality.
Repurposing the same strategy of saturation fear mongers use to normalize negativity, The Nipple Show explores how a deluge of media that celebrates, illuminates, or otherwise reframes the human nipple in a positive light might influence social norms for the better. For two nights only, art from Le’Andra LeSeur, Charles Herndon, Bex Ilsley, Adam Brouillette, Erika Mugglin, Nimer Aleck, Megan Davis, and others will co-exist with music from Rafting, Mungbean, FADE, Hi-ker, Bl_ank, and live DJs.
At the epicenter of it all is “The Nipple Sphere,” a large rounded sculpture made of silicone-casted nipples that houses a 360º camera in its hollow center. Existing within the exhibition/performance space, “The Nipple Sphere” will capture the sights and sounds of the The Nipple Show, allowing remote viewers far and wide to join in the experience through VR technologies. The VR footage, to be released after the event, will encase viewers in an orbicular throng of nipples, separated only by windows to the crowd, exhibited artworks, and performing musicians.
For the minds behind The Moon—interdisciplinary artist Natalie G’NAT Wetzel and photographer/cinematographer Mark Andrus—The Nipple Show is a natural extension of a shared interest in working at the intersection of art, media, culture, and human experience. Both together and apart, Wetzel and Andrus have brought their exploratory, communal approach to creating to such events as Desert Daze, Levitation Music Fest, and Independents’ Day Festival; to venues from The Womb Gallery in Oklahoma City to the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark; and with collaborators such as The Flaming Lips, Oliver Hibert, and Bokeh Monster.
The Nipple Show will unfold over two separate showings: November 17 from 6pm–12am and November 24 from 6-9pm. Both showings will take place in The Core, a multi-use space located underneath The Moon (323 Straight Ave. SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503). VR footage will be made accessible at themoongr.com in the ensuing weeks.
For those wanting to take part in exhibiting artist Brooks Wenzel’s Turn Your Nipples Into Wearable Art performance, 5pm early arrival on November 17th is required to take part in nipple mold making (no pre registration required).
